Wingham Primary School have made this their focus for 2019. Head of School, Pat Fletcher says, “Our MSPs (Members of School Parliament) were horrified by some programmes they had seen on television about the effect that plastic is having on the environment. The children realised that if every one of us does just a little to help, together we can make a big difference. The MSPs elected to make this their focus for the school year. We have already started a scheme for making eco-bricks using plastic bottles and non-recyclable soft plastics. We hope to be able to use these later in the year to build a new ‘construction’ for our Forest School area. We have become a collection point for recycling crisp packets and we are also collecting, and sending off for recycling, batteries and plastic-based stationery. We are encouraging the children to bring re-usable water bottles into school rather than the disposable kind and hope, that as the year progresses, we will be able to cut down on the amount of plastic wrapping put into lunch boxes.”
Together with the Scout Group who instigated this initiative at last year’s Parish Assembly the Parish Council are seeking like-minded enthusiastic residents to start a community focus group in order to help do whatever we possibly can to remove single use plastic from our lives – things such as bags, straws, cutlery, cups, bottles, food cartons, bin liners, cotton buds, toothbrushes. There are alternatives for all these things. It is hoped that this independent community group will raise awareness with local businesses and individuals to reduce the amount of plastic we throw away. Dover District Council are already in full support and will soon be running drop-in sessions in the village and visiting the school to help support the message and their activities.
The first meeting of the group takes place tonight – Thursday 21 March, 5pm at The Anchor and will be formally launched at the Parish Assembly on 15 April.
If you would like to be part of this group, please contact Kerry, Parish Council clerk, via email: firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 01227 722189.
